Was Golf Always a Professional Sport?

Golf was not always perceived as a super professional sport. At one time it was considered rebellious in Scotland. Golf was banned a few times because it was believed to interfere with day to day chores. Golfers even played in the streets. Neighbors were upsetting their neighbors and causing damage to buildings. Sounds like a time we should go back to. What do you think?
